"Did Robin Die Tonight?". This is the story that introduces Jason as the new Robin(or redefines it post-crisis as Jason was originally introduced as a circus performer and we all laughed)... but first it outlines how Dick was sacked. The Joker shoots Dick... Batman leaves him to purse the Joker and by the time he returns, Dick has fallen from a ledge. A news crew captures the incident hence the screaming headlines..."Did Robin Die Tonight." Dick is badly hurt by Bruce's decision, but the comic shows a compassionate Bruce, encouraging Dick to follow his own destiny.

"Close Before Striking, Act One"   (Nightwing/Batman) The scene opens with Matches Malone... one of Batman's identities, standing up to none other than Batman. Dick has stepped into the cowl to help give Matches a tougher look. Great scene in the car when Bruce returns. Dick's asks how he did and Batman gives an appraisal of his performance... listing all the flaws. Dick comments - "You know, suddenly, I don't feel so bad about tossing you through that window." Dick returns to the cave and there is a nice scene of him working out. The story ends with Oracle reporting the death of Matches Malone... which, of course, is impossible.

"Close Before Striking, Act Two"   (Nightwing/Batman) Nightwing is worried about Batman. He recounts to Oracale how he and Bruce tracked down the Matches Malone who has been shot only to discover that Bruce had assumed this man's identity many years before thinking he had died. "Close Before Striking, Act Three"   (Nightwing/Batman) Nightwing catches up with Batman and saves some soul he is sure Batman wasn't going to save. Batman tells him - "Go back to Bludhaven, kid." That really stung. Nightwing goes to Oracle and they spar... great scenes. They talk about the fact that it is through each other that they anchor themselves in reality. Dick is concerned Bruce has lost his. In the end, Bruce becomes Matches and successfully completes the case. Afterwards, he and Nightwing talk and Bruce admits that he almost lost himself but... "on theoff-chance that I do get lost again... I trust you'll be there to help me find my way."

"Santa Klaus Is Coming To Town"   Dick isn't in this one but he is mentioned. Sasha is decorating a Christmas tree and Bruce isn't happy about it saying they don't ususally decorate. She can't believe it and points out that he did raise a child. Bruces response - "When Dick was around, things were different." A very profound statement.

"Bruce Wayne: Fugitive - Part 1: The Scene of the Crime."   Oracle, Robin, Batgirl and Nightwing confront Batman. The others are wanting him to admit he's innocent, but not Dick. He believes him. Batman states that Bruce Wayne is just a mask which sparks a really emotional reaction from Dick. Batman and Nightwing come to blows until the trophy cabinet holding Jason's costume is shattered. Batman leaves as does Dick who, like the glass, is shattered. This is such a devestating issue. I feel so dreadfully sorry for Dick.

"Bruce Wayne: Fugitive - Part 18: Courage"   Scene opens with Nightwing and Batman in car and Batman apologises for hitting him. He then offers to tell Nightwing what happened before informing the others... a nice touch, I thought. It shows that Dick holds a special place... and we aren't talking about the fact that he's earned it. They way I see it, he's Bruce's son and Bruce is acknowledging that. Once the Bat-team in assembled, Bruce explains who is behind Vesper's murder and why. He mobilizes his team and by decoying Cain, Batman is able to capture him.

"Hush - Part 8: The Dead"   This ranks up there with one of my favourite issues. The banter and honesty between Dick and Bruce is wonderful. After the death of an old friend, Batman goes in pursuit of those responsible... with Nightwing at this side. Nightwing states that he has noticed how happy Bruce is with Selina in his life and appeals for him to tell her who he is. There is a great scene where Bruce evaluates Dick's skills. At the end, Batman does reveal to Catwoman who he is. This is up there with my top ten favourite stories... actually probably in the top three. It is an excellent story. You have to get a copy of this one.

"War Games: Art 1 Part 8: Last Stand at Alamo High"   Several different groups of criminals are inside Louis E. Grieve High School, and numerous teachers and students are trapped inside with them, Tim Drake. Tim has managed to get a number of people to safety. Great scene as Nightwing and Tim meet up inside... Nightwing, Batman and Batgirl arrived via the sewers and defeat the gunmen. Unfortunately, they are too late to save a girl, and as Batman carries her body from the school, questions are asked about whether or not the costumed heroes helped or hindered the situation.

"War Games: Art 2 Part 8: Orpheus in the Underworld"   Black Mask disguises himself as Orpheus, and as such is forced to battle Zeiss, who was sent to kill Orpheus and other 'crime bosses' by grief-stricken Henry Aquista. When Batman arrives on the scene, he gets the better of Zeiss, but is distracted by a large explosive planted by the assassin which he must defuse. As he does, Black Mask deliberately allows Zeiss to escape. Through Onyx, he arranges for the transportation of a large machine for dispersing gasses, and then listens in as Batman gives his allies and police their orders for a final showdown with the gangs in Robinson Park. Nightwing appears in one panel at the end.

"War Games: Art 3 Part 8: No Going Back."   Black Mask has invaded Oracle's clocktower sanctuary, believing it to be the Batcave. While he threatens her and murders another, Batman gathers his allies, going in to face Black Mask alone, while they deal with any further trouble. The heroes disperse from the scene, no longer welcomed by either the police or the media, and as they do, Batman receives word from Leslie Thompkins that Spoiler is dying. Nightwing, who is injured, desperately wants to help, but Alfred (I love Alfred) tells him to get back in bed or he'll break his kneecaps. Batman arrives in time to see Stephanie die and Black Mask takes over as leader of the Gotham's underworld. Dick is only on one page but it is worth bying the comic to have this one. (g)
