History has not been kind to Planet Earth. Half way through the 21st century, the pressure to secure dwindling resource wealth forced the Earth’s people to divide into four distinct groups known as Alliance Tribes - The Eastern Hope, The Western Alliance, The Northern Brotherhood and The Southern Coalition. Two of the groups sought only to obtain and protect that which they felt was theirs. The other two decided to take what they wanted. It became a race for survival... survival of the fittest.
For two decades the world was plagued by war. Once the conflict was over, man was left to look on the destruction he had caused. The four Alliance Tribes, made up of hundreds of nations, set aside their differences and began to search for co-operative ways to solve the Earth’s resource dilemma. Only a small percentage of humanity was aware that the arguments over gold, coal and other minerals were laughable. What the misguided masses didn’t realize was that the three resources they were fast running out of were air, water and food. It was the most closely guarded secret since Roswell. In Earth's 22nd century, humans continue to live their lives to the full, blissfully unaware that their planet is on the verge of total collapse. Resources are down, but recycling technology was repairing the damage... or was it? Humanity had sucked Mother Earth dry. The reality - people were living in doomed cities. Earth's natural environment no longer existed; the world's population had exploded; and food and fresh water were running out at an alarming rate; and still only a few in privileged military and intelligence positions knew the extent of the crisis. Humanity's only hope for survival lay in the stars. The Global Space Commission was established by the world’s leaders fifty years prior to the turn of the century. The very best scientists from all four Tribes were brought together, secretly. Their job - to find a new home for Earth’s population before the people realized they were doomed. For years, it appeared hopeless. Despite mapping thousands of universes, no planet with the ability to permanently sustain human life could be found... until now. A tiny space probe sent to the further most part of the mapped cosmos finally identified a future for Earth’s residents. The only challenge was getting there. Alpha Centauri was a ten year flight from Earth and Earth only had the ability to sustain life for another few decades. A single scientist believed he had the answer - hyperspace. However, his ideas were radical, his logic impossible to understand and his outlook on humanity questionable. Most ignored him as an eccentric. Man had known of the existence of hyperspace for years but they’d never had the ability to use the knowledge. It was the impossible dream of science fiction. Professor Sanchez insisted it could be a reality and developed the technology to build a hypergate - a door into hyperspace. If one could be built on Earth and a partner gate on Alpha Centauri, then travel between the two places could take place instantaneously. While the world watched what many believed to be a huge publicity stunt, the Global Space Commission started building Sanchez’s hypergate in Earth‘s orbit. A ship was designed to carry a select crew to Alpha Centauri where they could build the partner gate. After three years of planning and training, the dream would soon be realized. Earth’s hope now lay in the hands of the brave men who would carry out ‘Mission: Alpha.’ |
