(CAROL MILLER walks into her daughter's room and picks up her jacket off of the bed. She holds it out.) CAROL MILLER: You're going to be late for school. (ANNIE stands up from her chair and grabs her things.) ANNIE MILLER: I know, I know. CAROL MILELER: Mr. Fiffer said you can't bring your camera to school anymore. ANNIE MILLER: I'll keep it in my locker. CAROL MILLER: (holds out her hand) Hand it over. (But ANNIE pulls the camera out of her mother's grasp and hangs on to it. She reaches up and kisses her mother on her cheek and heads out the door.) ANNIE MILLER: Bye. (CAROL turns to watch her daughter go. At the doorway, ANNIE turns around and gives her mother a cheeky grin. She heads out the hallway.) SHORT TIME CUT TO: SCENE #02: [EXT. MAPLE STREET -- SCHOOL BUS STOP - MORNING/ EVENING] (Out at the corner on Maple Street, the school bus pulls away from its regular stop. In the rain, ANNIE MILLER runs down the sidewalk under her umbrella trying to catch the bus.) ANNIE MILLER: Wait! Wait! (The bus pulls away leaving ANNIE stranded at the bus stop.) Some lit candles are even placed at the base of the thick tree nearby.) JACK MALONE: (v.o.) ... walks to the bus stop. (Dissolve in: Ribbons are tied around the school bus stop sign and around the thick branch of the nearby tree.) (Dissolve in: A couple of posters are stapled to the tree along with more ribbons.) JACK MALONE: (v.o.) She didn't get on the bus and she never showed up at school. (Dissolve in: People.) SCENE #03: [EXT. MAPLE STREET - SCHOOL BUS STOP - EVENING - CONTINUOUS] (JACK and SAMANTHA stand in front of the School Bus Stop.) JACK: They found this camcorder six blocks away on the road by a stop sign. It's in the opposite direction of the school. SAMANTHA: Is there anything on it we can salvage? JACK: I'll have to give it to tech, see what they can dig out. (It starts to rain.) (BARRY MITCHUM, the mayor, approaches them and introduces himself.) BARRY MITCHUM: Barry Mitchum. I'm the mayor. SAMANTHA: Special Agent Spade. JACK: Special Agent Malone. (They shake hands.) BARRY MITCHUM: It's just such a shock. We're, uh ... we're pretty surprised by all this, but everybody's ready to help. JACK: We're going to have to talk to a lot of people. Some of them we're going to have question officially. That could cause some fallout. (BARRY MITCHUM sighs.) So whatever you can do to keep people united and calm would be a great help. BARRY MITCHUM: Whatever you need. SAMANTHA: Did you know Annie Miller? BARRY MITCHUM: Yeah. She was in my son's class. You think she was taken by someone who lives here? JACK: It's too hard to tell yet. BARRY MITCHUM: You know, this town - nobody here even locks their doors. People leave their keys in their cars. (JACK nods.) I just never thought it would happen here. (BARRY MITCHUM turns and leaves.) (The camera follows him and rests on a MISSING poster stapled to the nearby tree. It reads: ) MISSING {photo of ANNIE wearing red} ANNIE MILLER PLEASE CALL (516) 555-0136 FADE TO WHITE END OF TEASER. ROLL TITLE CREDITS (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN. [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) - DAY] LEGEND: 12 HOURS MISSING SCENE #04: [INT. FBI - BULLPEN -- DAY] (MARTIN and VIVIAN stand in front of the board with the map on it.) MARTIN: Ravenwood, New York; population 7,806. VIVIAN: And all of them suspects. MARTIN: Seems like your classic small town: Main street, town hall, two schools. DANNY: And a serious crime problem. (VIVIAN turns around to look at DANNY. DANNY joins them in front of the board.) VIVIAN: What do you got? DANNY: (reading the file) Here's the last year: Two kids arrested for getting high behind the gym. Couple of petty thefts and one DUI. That's it. JACK: Okay, tech did a pass at Annie's video. (They turn around and move toward JACK who is standing in front of the conference table. In front of him on the table is a lap top computer.) JACK: This is what they came up with. There's no audio, but let's have a look. (He starts the video on the laptop.) (The video shows a weird angle of some shoes.) VIVIAN: Must have turned it on when she knew she was in trouble. MARTIN: Mm-hmmm. (The video again shows the camera jerking around.) DANNY: There's a struggle. (The camera again jerks around and shows a strange angle of the car door knob.) MARTIN: Oh ... she's trying to get out right there. (The camera falls to the ground and shows ground. It stop moving.) JACK: They're still trying to upgrade the image. (MARTIN turns and heads back to the map board and shows them what he's got.) MARTIN: All right, well, here's what I got so far. School's here. Bus stop's here. She starts walking; somebody stops and offers her a lift. She gets in ... but they make a wrong turn. That's when she gets nervous and turns on the camera. When he stops at the stop sign at Applewood that's when she tries to get out of the car. He grabs her and they have this struggle and that's where the camera dropped-- right there. DANNY: Well, if she went willingly that probably means she knows the person. JACK: Not necessarily. Small town, trusting girl ... she might have accepted a lift from a stranger. The sooner we get a profile on her the more we're going to know. VIVIAN: Is the mom talking yet? JACK: Uh, last time I talked to Sam she was still pretty shook up. I'm going to head out there. Martin, you and Viv go talk to the teachers, friends ... see what you can find out. Danny, you come with me. (JACK and DANNY head across the bullpen toward the doors.) JACK: (to DANNY) The mayor set up an emergency rescue center at trainer's bar and grill. I want you to sniff around there and see what you can find out. CUT TO: (Camera cuts back to the map on the board.) (MARTIN stares at the map. He shakes his head. VIVIAN turns around to look at MARTIN.) VIVIAN: What's so fascinating? MARTIN: Oh, it's nothing. I was just ... this town, it seems so innocent, you know? VIVIAN: Just wait till we're done with them. CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK COMMUNITY (STOCK) - DAY] SCENE #05: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - ANNIE'S BEDROOM -- DAY] (SAMANTHA pushes the bedroom door open. She looks around, then enters the bedroom.) (She walks into the room slowly, her eyes sweeping the room completely from left to right. She takes it all in. The old movie posters on the wall, the computer on the desk, the dresser, the television set.) (SAMANTHA heads for the computer.) (She reaches the desk and sees a small framed photo of ANNIE MILLER and SIOBHAN ARINTERO, arms around each other, both smiling brightly at the camera. A caption sticker on the photo on SIOBHAN reads: "FRIENDS 4 EVER". The photo is in a "Girls' Rule" frame.) (SAMANTHA picks the framed photo up and stares at it. She puts it back down on the desk.) (She takes a seat in front of the mac computer. She tugs on the middle drawer only to find it locked. She looks around and finds the key hanging around one of the barbie dolls sitting propped up next to the computer.) (She uses the key and unlocks the drawer.) (Inside, she finds a storage box. She opens it and sees two CD-ROMs. The one on the left is in the image of a clock face. Written on it is, "The Annie and Siobhan Show". The clock hands point to 12:15. The disk on the right reads: "The Annie and Siobhan Show!" (volume eleven). SAMANTHA takes out the disk on the left, (The Annie and Siobhan Show! volume eleven) and slips it into the computer drive.) CUT TO: SCENE #06: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - DOWNSTAIRS -- DAY] (The front door opens and JACK walks in. There are a lot of people milling about. JACK glances about, then heads upstairs.) CUT TO: SCENE #07: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - ANNIE'S BEDROOM - DAY - CONTINUOUS] (JACK walks into the bedroom.) JACK: (quietly) How's it going? (SAMANTHA sighs.) SAMANTHA: Hi. I, uh ... found her secret stash of home movies. The other girl is Siobhan Arintero. (On screen the ANNIE AND SIOBHAN SHOW starts. On the monitor, the two girls dance as the title appears on screen.) JACK: Martin and Viv are up at her house right now. How's the mom? SAMANTHA: Oh ... still pretty out of it. She's, uh ... she's in the bedroom. JACK: Okay. SAMANTHA: Okay. (JACK puts a hand on SAMANTHA'S arm, turns and walks out of the room.) (SAMANTHA turns her attention back to the monitor where she watches the two girls dance on screen.) (SAMANTHA smiles.) LYRICS: ["Nobody's Fool", Avil Lavigne] Oh, when my colors show / and that's the way it has to be, honestly / 'cause creativity could never bloom in my room / I'd throw it all away before I rot / so don't call me with a compromise... (The video slows down and holds on ANNIE MILLER.) (SAMANTHA stares at the video.) CUT TO: SCENE #08: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - CAROL'S BEDROOM - DAY -- CONTINUOUS] (JACK appears in the doorway. CAROL MILLER is lying down on the bed. Next to her, DERRICK TRAINER sits at the edge of the bed with a comforting hand on her forehead.) JACK: Hi, I'm Special Agent Malone from the FBI. (DERRICK TRAINER looks up at JACK. JACK steps into the room.) DERRICK TRAINER: Carol ... the FBI is here. Are you up for ... ? CAROL MILLER: Oh... yeah. Oh, sure. DERRICK TRAINER: Okay. (CAROL MILLER sits up.) JACK: Please, don't get up. Don't get up. Stay. CAROL MILLER: That's fine. No, it's okay. JACK: (to DERRICK TRAINER) Uh, I'd like to speak to Mrs. Miller alone. DERRICK TRAINER: Oh, yeah, okay. Um... I'll be downstairs if you need me. CAROL MILLER: Okay. DERRICK TRAINER: Okay. CAROL MILLER: Thank you. (DERRICK TRAINER steps out of the bedroom. JACK closes the door behind him.) (CAROL MILLER sighs.) JACK: Mrs. Miller, I know that you've already talked to the police. I've read their report but there's a few things that I would like to, uh ... go over with you. (JACK reaches into his pocket and pulls out his notebook and pen.) CAROL MILLER: Sure. JACK: Okay. Did, uh ... did Annie have any boyfriends? CAROL MILLER: No. She's not interested in boys. JACK: She's 13 and she's not interested in boys? CAROL MILLER: (chuckles) She's precocious. But she's a little bit shy and she's not physically very developed. It's just pretty much her and Siobhan. They've been best friends since they were in the third grade and they're pretty inseparable. JACK: Did they socialize with other kids their age? CAROL MILLER: No, not really. They, um ... they're considered to kind of be outsiders. You know... I told Annie that it's okay to be different. That ... (Her voice cracks and she starts to cry.) CAROL MILLER: ... you don't have to be part of the pack. (crying) That you just have to be who you are. JACK: Uh ... (JACK reaches into his pocket and takes out a handkerchief. he offers it to her.) JACK: Would you like a handkerchief? CAROL MILLER: No, I'm okay. JACK: (softly) It's okay, just talk. Take your time. (CAROL MILLER continues to cry.) CUT TO: SCENE #09: [INT. ARINTERO RESIDENCE] (VIVIAN and MARTIN interview SIOBHAN ARINTERO in the presence of her parents.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: I have no idea. I was waiting for her at the bus stop like usual and she was late. That's it. VIVIAN: Any chance she was going to play hooky with a boy or some other friend? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: She wouldn't have gone anywhere without telling me first. VIVIAN: Are there any boyfriends? MR. ARINTERO: My daughter's too young for that. So is Annie. VIVIAN: Mr. Arintero please let her answer the questions. MR. ARINTERO: I'm sorry. Go ahead, sweetheart. WANDA ARINTERO: You can tell us anything. No one will be mad at you no matter what. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: There's nothing to get mad at. We don't have any boyfriends. We don't do drugs. We're into our own thing. Annie wouldn't have gone anywhere without telling me first. MARTIN: Do you have any idea who she might have gotten in the car with? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: We know everyone here. It could have been anyone. CUT TO: SCENE #10: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - CAROL'S BEDROOM - DAY] (JACK continues to interview CAROL MILLER.) JACK: Who are the significant men in Annie's life? Teachers, coaches ... anybody that she spends a lot of time with. CAROL MILLER: Just Derrick Trainer, the man that was here. JACK: Trainer? CAROL MILLER: Yeah. JACK: And what's his relationship with you? CAROL MILLER: Annie's godfather. My husband died when Annie was eight and Derrick's been everything to us. JACK: But you're not romantically involved? CAROL MILLER: No. We're just good friends. JACK: I, uh ... saw that Annie has a computer. She spend a lot of time on the net? CAROL MILLER: No. We only have one phone line so I didn't sign up for it and she really just uses the computer for her video stuff. JACK: What do you know about those videos? CAROL MILLER: You mean "The Annie and Siobhan Show"? They run around, they interview people ... they pretend that they have their own talk show. JACK: She keeps the DVDs locked up in her drawer. CAROL MILLER: Yeah, I know that. It's just being 13. It's asserting her independence. JACK: Right. CAROL MILLER: I'm okay with that. I ... I don't think that there's anything sinister on those videos. CUT TO: SCENE #11: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - ANNIE'S BEDROOM - DAY -- CONTINUOUS] (SAMANTHA continues to watch the video on the computer. On the video we see DERRICK TRAINER chasing ANNIE MILLER around her bedroom. They're laughing and having a grand time.) DERRICK TRAINER: (on video) (laughing) Are you kidding me? Come on. (On video: ANNIE jumps standing up onto the bed. DERRICK rushes over to her and grabs her. He slings her over his shoulder where he starts to spin around. ANNIE is laughing and hitting DERRICK on the back.) ANNIE MILLER: (laughing and screaming) (on video) No! Don't! DERRICK TRAINER: (on video) You remember how hard she smacked me? Oh ... what's this? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video o.s.) Come on, you guys. (JACK walks into the bedroom. SAMANTHA turns slightly, knowing that he's there.) SAMANTHA: I want you to look at this. (She hits the computer keyboard.) Hang on. (She gets the video to where she wants him to watch.) Okay, look. (On video: DERRICK TRAINER and ANNIE are playing a hand game where she tries to hit his hands and he tries to move them away.) (ANNIE tries several times and DERRICK always manages to make her miss. He turns to the camera and smiles. Distracted, ANNIE manages to hit his hands.) DERRICK TRAINER: (on video) Hey ... ooh. Ow! (He laughs. She laughs. She dodges him and runs. He chases after her. ) DERRICK TRAINER: (on video) Are you kidding me? Don't! (JACK takes a step closer to the monitor, trying to assess what's really happening on the screen.) (The video continues.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video o.s.) You guys! DERRICK TRAINER: You remember how hard she smacked me? (With theatrical exaggeration, DERRICK TRAINER smacks ANNIE on her bottom.) DERRICK TRAINER: Ow. Oh! (SIOBHAN turns the camera around so that she's on it.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) That's disgusting, okay? CUT TO: SCENE #12: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE -- DOWNSTAIRS] (JACK walks down the stairs and looks around for someone. He walks from room to room looking for someone.) (He heads back to search some more.) CUT TO: SCENE #13: [INT. ARINTERO RESIDENCE] (MARTIN and VIVIAN continue to interview SIOBHAN ARINTERO.) VIVIAN: Tell me about your tv show. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: Well, it's kind of like a documentary. VIVIAN: About what? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: Well, it's about us and the town and things we see. (MARTIN'S cell phone rings. He stands up and steps aside to answer it.) MARTIN: Excuse me. (to phone) Yeah? Mm-hmm. (SIOBHAN watches MARTIN for a moment. She continues to talk with VIVIAN.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: Annie's the Director and I'm the Producer. We take turns shooting. Annie's got a great eye. VIVIAN: That's a pretty bracelet. (SIOBHAN fingers the bracelet on her right wrist.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: It's a friendship bracelet. Me and Annie both have one. (MARTIN hangs up.) MARTIN: Sorry about that. (He sits down.) So, uh, I was wondering ... Annie's godfather, Derrick Trainer do you get to hang out with him much? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: Uncle Derrick? MARTIN: Mm-hmm. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: Yeah, he's really cool. I've known him practically my whole life. MR. ARINTERO: Why are you asking about Derrick? MARTIN: Oh, no reason in particular. We just, uh ... we just want to get a sense of the girls' lives. CUT TO: SCENE #14: [INT. TRAINOR'S BAR & GRILLE -- DAY] LEGEND: 16 HOURS MISSING (Camera opens on an officer who picks up a stack of "MISSING" flyers with ANNIE MILLER'S picture and contact number on it.) (Over at the bar, MARLA looks at DANNY who is sitting at the bar nursing his non-alcoholic drink.) MARLA: Sure you don't want a real drink? DANNY: No, I'm fine. Thanks. MARLA: Not on the job DANNY: Not ever. MARLA: Oh. Right. (JACK walks in and puts an arm on DANNY to let him know that he's there.) JACK: What's going on? DANNY: I can't get a read on this guy. (Over at the far side of the bar, DERRICK TRAINER speaks with MARLA.) (He walks over to them.) DERRICK TRAINER: Hey, uh, I'm sorry I couldn't speak with you at the house. I just, uh, I wanted to get back here to help out. How's Carol doing? JACK: Under the circumstances, she's going pretty well. DERRICK TRAINER: I just can't believe this. I've known Annie since the day she was born. JACK: Mr. Trainer, why don't we go sit in the corner? I have a few questions I need to ask you anyway. DERRICK TRAINER: Yeah, sure. (DERRICK puts the stack of plates he's carrying on the tray and follows JACK to a small booth where they continue to speak privately.) (JACK takes out his notebook and pen from his coat pocket.) JACK: Can you, uh ... can you tell me the nature of your relationship with Annie? DERRICK TRAINER: The nature? JACK: Yes. DERRICK TRAINER: Carol and Annie are pretty much the only family I've ever known. She's like a daughter to me. JACK: Carol tells me that Annie went to your place the night she disappeared. Well, what can you tell me about that? DERRICK TRAINER: Uh, it was about 6:30. Um ... she was having a typical spat with her mom. So, she, uh, decided to come over and hang out. (Quick flashback to: ANNIE sits on the couch with her head back. Suddenly, she gets up and continues to rant about her mom. DERRICK TRAINER sits in the chair across the room leafing through an OC GOLF magazine.) ANNIE: And she so totally doesn't get my situation or me or my life, because if she did then she wouldn't have asked if I was going to be in the talent show since it's so totally obvious that no one in my school is interested in videos. DERRICK TRAINER: (chuckles) You know, maybe if you let your mom into your life more then she wouldn't say so many things that make you crazy. ANNIE: Like how? DERRICK TRAINER: Like show her the videos that you Siobhan are making. Come on, Annie, that's why I got you the camera. (ANNIE sits back down on the couch.) ANNIE: Well, she wouldn't understand them. (She puts her head in her hands and mumbles frustratedly.) ANNIE: What's wrong with me? I feel like I'm all over the place. In a million pieces. (DERRICK puts the magazine aside and gets up.) DERRICK TRAINER: Nothing is wrong with you, sweetheart. (He sits down next to her and puts his arm around her shoulders.) DERRICK TRAINER: You're just 13, that's all. (End of flashback. Resume to present.) JACK: So, you gave her the camera. DERRICK TRAINER: I thought it would be good for her. You know, she's very creative and, um ... not really very social. JACK: How late did she stay at your place that night? DERRICK TRAINER: Till about eight o'clock. JACK: Carol mentioned that, uh ... sometimes Annie slept over at your house. DERRICK TRAINER: Yeah, on several occasions. When they needed time-out. JACK: Right. So, where were you this morning? DERRICK TRAINER: Uh, I was here. I have bread deliveries at six-thirty. JACK: Anyone else? DERRICK TRAINER: Marla. (JACK nods his head and jots a note down in his notebook.) CUT TO: SCENE #15: [INT. TRAINOR'S BAR & GRILLE - DAY -- CONTINUOUS] (DANNY talks with MARLA.) DANNY: How long have you been working here? MARLA: A couple of years. DANNY: You like it? MARLA: Yeah. You know, it's right in the center of things and Derrick's so good to me. Everybody loves Derrick. DANNY: Hmm. (JACK joins them at the bar.) JACK: Hi. MARLA: Hi. JACK: Marla, right? MARLA: Yeah. That's right. JACK: Where were you this morning? MARLA: Uh ... I was here. Got here about ... 6:30. JACK: Is that what time you usually start? MARLA: Actually, no. I'm doing double shifts this week. Uh ... I usually get here about three in the afternoon, but I offered to help Derrick out. JACK: And Derrick, uh ... was he here? MARLA: Yes. Uh ... same time, 6:30. JACK: So you two spent all morning together. MARLA: Right. JACK: Anyone else? MARLA: Uh ... no. The busboys and waiters don't get here till 9:00. JACK: Okay. Thanks. MARLA: Okay. DANNY: Thanks for the drink. MARLA: You bet. JACK: (to DANNY) Do me a favor. Be here tomorrow morning at 6:30 when the bread gets delivered. CUT TO: [EXT. Thank you. JACK: Looks like I should have brought you eye drops. SAMANTHA: Yeah, and you look like a million bucks. Look at this. (SAMANTHA turns her attention back to the monitor. On video, ANNIE and SIOBHAN sit cross-legged, side-by-side on the bed. They have a conversation directly to the camera.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) You know who thinks you're cute? ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Who? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Mr. Steamy Eyes. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Ew. You mean Mr. Steamy Four Eyes. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Mr. Steamy Four Eyes. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Well, I feel kind of sorry for him. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Oh, please. You feel sorry for everybody. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) I do. He's kinda pathetic. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Yeah. In a steamy four eyes kind of way. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Eww. (They giggle and laugh. Then ANNIE puts her fingers to her face as if she's wearing glasses.) (SAMANTHA turns to JACK and asks.) SAMANTHA: Does Derrick Trainer wear glasses? JACK: I don't think so. (SAMANTHA rubs her temples in frustration.) JACK: Siobhan would know who it is. SAMANTHA: I've been sitting here all night looking for clues, looking for suspects. I mean, I'm not just seeing her I'm seeing ... everything she sees and I keep thinking that if I get to know her maybe that'll help, you know? And then I think maybe I'll get to know her and it won't make any difference at all, it just ... (SAMANTHA covers her eyes with her hands.) ... God, I'm sorry. (JACK rubs her back.) JACK: This is ... well, you're not supposed to get used to this. You're not. (She nods.) When you do ... it's time to hang it up. (JACK turns and walks away.) CUT TO: SCENE #17: [EXT. VIVIAN: The other kids tried, but she insisted that she had to go home because she'd forgotten something. JACK: Look, I want you to call the mayor. Tell him to set up a meeting outside the town hall so we can do surveillance. Maybe we can draw this guy out into the open. VIVIAN: Okay. (VIVIAN leaves. JACK walks toward DANNY.) JACK: Danny, anything on Derrick Trainer? DANNY: His alibi does not check out. (SAMANTHA stands up behind DANNY listening in.) DANNY: The bread guy never saw him. You're pushing the bartender? Yeah. She's sticking to her story. I think I'm going to take a crack at this Derrick guy. JACK: No, no, no, I'm going to send Samantha. Trainer will be less intimidated by a woman. No offense. SAMANTHA: None taken. (SAMANTHA turns around to get her things. JACK turns to MARTIN.) JACK: Martin, anything on that tape from the car? (MARTIN is on the phone, but covers the mouthpiece to answer JACK'S question.) MARTIN: They got some additional sound. They're still working on picture. JACK: Tell them to drop everything. I want them to focus on that video. MARTIN: (to phone) Okay, I'll call you back. (JACK leaves.) CUT TO: SCENE #19: [EXT. ARINTERO RESIDENCE - LIVING ROOM - DAY] (JACK and VIVIAN interview MR. and MRS. ARINTERO.) WANDA ARINTERO: She left her math book behind. I told her not to go anywhere by herself. VIVIAN: What are the shortcuts back to the house? WANDA ARINTERO: The fastest way is by the street and it's only four blocks from here to the bus stop. Four blocks. How could no one have seen anything? MR. ARINTERO: (getting upset) How could they have not seen? That's what I want to know. What are you people doing out there? I mean, you walk around town with your ... with your fancy badges, doing what? JACK: Mr. Arintero, I understand how you feel. MR. ARINTERO: (yelling) How do you know how I feel?! JACK: I understand how you feel because I have two small daughters of my own. Now, please sit down so we can discuss this. MR. ARINTERO: (shouts) Don't tell me what to do in my own house! JACK: I-I understand completely, okay? But the sooner we start talking about this the sooner we can find your daughter. (MR. ARINTERO sits down. VIVIAN also takes a seat.) JACK: Thank you. (After a moment.) JACK: Now, we believe that whoever took your daughter knew both the girls. MR. ARINTERO: What about Derrick Trainer? JACK: What about him? MR. ARINTERO: I don't trust him. VIVIAN: You didn't say anything about that yesterday. MR. ARINTERO: It didn't occur to me yesterday but now ... after I think about it, there's just something strange about that guy. WANDA ARINTERO: Don't be ridiculous. Derrick would never do anything to the girls. MR. ARINTERO: How do you know? How do we really know? How do we really know anything about him? WANDA ARINTERO: He practically raised Annie. JACK: Has he ever done anything to give you cause for concern? MR. ARINTERO: No. It's, it's just unnatural for a man his age to spend so much time with two teenage girls. Oh, God. CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK - COMMUNITY (STOCK) - DAY] SCENE #21: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - LIVING ROOM - DAY] (SAMANTHA questions both CAROL MILLER and DERRICK TRAINER.) SAMANTHA: In one of their videos, the girls talked about a Mr. Four Eyes, a Mr. Steamy Four Eyes. Do you have any idea who that could be? CAROL MILLER: No. SAMANTHA: Mr. Trainer? DERRICK TRAINER: You know, they have so many silly nicknames for everything. SAMANTHA: You don't wear glasses, do you, Mr. Trainer? DERRICK TRAINER: Me? No. 20/20 vision. SAMANTHA: They said they thought he was kind of, uh ... sad and pathetic. CAROL MILLER: 13-year-old girls think all adults are sad and pathetic. It could be anyone. SAMANTHA: Absolutely. Mr. Trainer could I speak with you for a moment privately? (CAROL sighs. DERRICK TRAINER stands up.) DERRICK TRAINER: (to CAROL) I'll be back. (Both he and SAMANTHA move to another part of the room. Behind them, someone brings CAROL MILLER a cup of something to drink. They sit down next to her.) SAMANTHA: You know, Mr. Keats, your bread-delivery guy, he said that you usually sign for the delivery but yesterday, it was Marla. He said he didn't remember actually seeing you at the restaurant. DERRICK TRAINER: I was in the office paying bills. SAMANTHA: What about this morning? DERRICK TRAINER: I was at home ... asleep. It was 7:00 A.M. (getting emotional) And I am exhausted. Yesterday was horrendous, as you know and I was up with Carol most of the night. SAMANTHA: Right. Right, well, then you wouldn't mind if we checked your apartment? DERRICK TRAINER: Go ahead. I don't have anything to hide. CUT TO: [EXT. You see Mr. Enthusiastic? MARTIN: If he's here, he's got nuts of steel. DANNY: Can't help it. He's got to come back. He's got t part of the thrill. MARTIN: Two girls in 24 hours and right under our noses. It's like this son of a bitch is taunting us. CUT TO: SCENE #23: [EXT. OUTSIDE CITY CALL - DAY - CONTINUOUS] (BARRY MITCHUM and JACK walk to the front.) BARRY MITCHUM: (to JACK) This is a great community but people's nerves are in shock right now. I'm afraid this whole thing might backfire. JACK: We don't know a lot. We just find this a very effective way to pick up suspects. (They reach the podium. BARRY MITCHUM clears his throat.) BARRY MITCHUM: I want to let you know that my wife ... and my children are as scared as you are. And we are doing everything in our power to catch the person who is terrorizing our town. I'm going to introduce Special Agent Jack Malone from the FBI. JACK: I'd just like to assure all of you that we are running down every lead and that if anyone has any information that you think can help please feel free to come forward. Thank you. BARRY MITCHUM: Thank you very much. CUT TO: SCENE #24: [INT. ARINTERO LANDSCAPING - BACK OFFICE -- DAY] LEGEND: ARINTERO LANDSCAPING (VIVIAN approaches MR. BRANDINI.) VIVIAN: Mr. Brandini? MR. BRANDINI: That's right. VIVIAN: I'm Special Agent Johnson from the FBI. Mr. Arintero told me that you would help us. We need a list of all his employees. MR. BRANDINI: Sure. You want everyone? (MR. BRANDINI opens the desk drawer.) VIVIAN: Mm-hmm. And maybe you could tell me if any of them have records? (MR. BRANDINI looks at VIVIAN.) VIVIAN: (shrugs) I'm going to find out anyways. You might as well save me some time. (He hands the file to VIVIAN.) MR. BRANDINI: Uh ... we have, uh, 24 employees and, far as I know, there's two that have had run-ins with the law. Ah ... Rodrigues who took a job down in Florida a couple of weeks ago and Miguel Gonzales. VIVIAN: What kind of trouble with Gonzales? MR. BRANDINI: Well, he had a couple of DUIs and some domestic thing, you know. I mean, nothing major. VIVIAN: Beating your wife is nothing major? MR. BRANDINI: (chuckles) I-I didn't mean to offend. I-I mean, it's not like it's murder, right? VIVIAN: Could you verify Mr. Gonzales's whereabouts these past two mornings? MR. BRANDINI: Well, he starts work at around 8:00 and he comes in from Harper, though. And I'm sorry I can't be of more help. VIVIAN: Well, we'll start with what we've got. Thanks. CUT TO: SCENE #25: [EXT. CITY HALL -- DAY] (JACK walks around milling through the crowd. MARTIN joins him.) MARTIN: Jack... we've, uh, got another Siobhan sighting ten-year-old girl thought she saw her going into the woods. I think she's just caught up in the excitement. (A woman walks up to them.) EMMA CARWOOD: Excuse me. My name's Emma Carwood for the mayor. JACK: Right. EMMA CARWOOD: I wanted to tell you something. I'm probably being ridiculous. But I guess you never really know anybody. JACK: Anything that you tell us will be held in the strictest confidence. EMMA CARWOOD: Well, he was at the two-day mayor convention in Hoboken and didn't get back until yesterday morning at 9:00. But I called him the night before at his hotel - it must have been 11:30 or so -- and he had already checked out. I hope I didn't do anything wrong telling you. JACK: No, not at all. In fact, thank you very much. (JACK shakes her hand. EMMA CARWOOD smiles and leaves.) JACK: Must be the town snitch. MARTIN: Well, he is a politician. JACK: That's right. MARTIN: I'll run it out. JACK: Please. (MARTIN leaves.) CUT TO: SCENE #26: [INT. TRAINER RESIDENCE -- DAY] (DERRICK TRAINER sits and waits as the FBI search his residence.) CAROL MILLER: Derrick? (CAROL appears in the front doorway. She walks into the house.) CAROL MILELR: Why are you doing this? DERRICK TRAINER: I don't know, but you know ... CAROL MILLER: What is going on here? DERRICK TRAINER: I ... just ... look. (SAMANTHA walks out of one of the rooms and holds up a small shirt.) SAMANTHA: Mr. Trainer. We found this in your laundry. Who does it belong to? CAROL MILELR: It's Annie's t-shirt. SAMANTHA: And we found... this. (SAMANTHA CAROL MILLER: Those are hers. DERRICK TRAINER: Uh... she... um ... she, uh... left them here one night when she spent the night. SAMANTHA: And what were they doing in the dryer, freshly washed? DERRICK TRAINER: I don't know. I mean, she probably just put them into my laundry basket, like she always does and then I put everything in the wash. SAMANTHA: So yesterday with everything that was going on you decided to do ... laundry? DERRICK TRAINER: I was just trying to keep myself busy. Take my mind off of things. Tell her, Carol. (CAROL stares at SAMANTHA and doesn't say anything.) DERRICK TRAINER: (insistent) Carol, tell her. I would never do anything to Annie, please. (CAROL still doesn't say anything.) DERRICK TRAINER: Carol! CAROL MILLER: I can't deal with this right now. (CAROL shakes her head and walks out of the house. The door slams shut behind her.) (DERRICK TRAINER looks over at SAMANTHA.) CUT TO: SCENE #27: [EXT. CITY HALL - DAY] (JACK'S cell phone rings. He answers it.) JACK: Yeah? INTERCUT WITH: [INT. TRAINER RESIDENCE - DAY - CONTINUOUS] SAMANTHA: We found a pair of Annie's underwear in Derrick Trainer's washing machine, freshly laundered. JACK: I'll be right over. SAMANTHA: No, I think we should bring him in. JACK: Okay, but take him out the back door. (JACK hangs up.) JACK: Danny. (JACK sighs. DANNY walks over to JACK.) DANNY: Wh-what? JACK: I want you to go and pound that bartender until she tells you why she covered for Derrick Trainer. DANNY: You got it. (DANNY leaves. BARRY MITCHUM walks up to JACK, his phone in his hand.) BARRY MITCHUM: I just got a call from the police chief. It's not good. CUT TO: SCENE #28: [EXT. NEAR TRAILER -- DAY] (JACK walks past the CORONER'S van and toward the body at the end of the alleyway. VIVIAN is already there standing over the blanket-covered figure on the grass.) VIVIAN: Preliminary suggests strangulation. She was left out in the open but he put a blanket over her. (JACK kneels down next to the body and lifts up the blanket.) JACK: Let me have a closer look. (He looks at the body, then takes a deep breath. Clearly, this is something that's affecting him deeply.) CUT TO: SCENE #29: [EXT. MILLER RESIDENCE - LATE AFTERNOON] (JACK and SAMANTHA walk up to the front door. They ring the doorbell.) (The door opens and CAROL MILLER smiles at them.) CAROL MILLER: Hi. (Immediately, she knows that something's wrong.) CAROL MILLER: What? What is it? JACK: Mrs. Miller, can we come in? (Looking at JACK and SAMANTHA, CAROL MILLER knows exactly why they're there.) CAROL MILLER: (crying) No! No, no, no, no, no, no! (She raises her fists in grief and hits JACK on his chest. He wraps his arms around her and holds her as she cries.) CAROL MILLER: (wailing) No, no, no, no, no, no ... FADE TO BLACK. (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN. [EXT. NEW YORK COMMUNITY (STOCK) - DAY] SCENE #30: [INT. ARINTERO RESIDENCE - DINING ROOM --] (VIVIAN and MARTIN are both back with the ARINTERO'S.) VIVIAN: Please, don't give up hope. Siobhan may still be alive. MR. ARINTERO: You arrested Derrick Trainer. He's the one responsible. VIVIAN: We have taken him in for questioning. WANDA ARINTERO: I heard he was in handcuffs. MARTIN: We're hoping the autopsy will give us some answers. (This upsets MRS. ARINTERO and she starts to cry.) MRS. ARINTERO (voice cracking) You going to do an autopsy? (She turns to her husband. They both cry.) CUT TO: SCENE #31: [INT. BAR -- DAY] (DANNY questions MARLA again.) MARLA: Okay, he came to me last night after his senior partners over at Carol's and he was really scared. And he said that ... he said that at the time of Annie's disappearance, he was with someone and that she was married and he didn't want to expose her and could I just cover for him and say that he was here. DANNY: Who's the woman? MARLA: I... I don't know. DANNY: Hey, Marla ... Annie Miller is dead. If Derrick Trainer killed her you are an accessory. (DANNY stands up and leaves.) CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) - DAY] SCENE #32: [INT. FBI - INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY] (JACK and SAMANTHA question DERRICK TRAINER.) DERRICK TRAINER: Yes, I had a relationship with this amazing girl. That it must have been perverted or violent-- that's your world, isn't it? Where a grown man harm young girls and every relationship is tainted with violence. You see what you want to see. JACK: We found her underwear in your washing machine. SAMANTHA: We know you weren't at the restaurant that morning; we know you asked the bartender to lie for you. DERRICK TRAINER: I've already lost Annie and Carol. I'm not going to let you take anything else away from me. I am innocent. I haven't done anything. JACK: Who's the woman? Marla told us you were having an affair. We need to speak to her if it's true. DERRICK TRAINER: I can't tell you. SAMANTHA: Look. (SAMANTHA sits down at the table.) SAMANTHA: Look! Nothing you say will go beyond this room, Mr. Trainer. But if you're innocent, we want to know so we can clear you and move on. DERRICK TRAINER: Do you think I'm stupid? I watch the news ... I know what happens to people. (SAMANTHA sighs.) JACK: If you have a real alibi and you fail to disclose it you're not being heroic; you were costing us time and you were possibly costing Siobhan her life! DERRICK TRAINER: I'm sorry, I need to speak to my lawyer. (Frustrated, SAMANTHA gets up and leaves.) CUT TO: SCENE #33: [INT. FBI - HALLWAY] (JACK and SAMANTHA head down the hallway to the video room.) SAMANTHA: If he's innocent he's making it a lot harder for himself. JACK: We're not helping. He should be interviewed about his house. SAMANTHA: What, you want to hold him? JACK: We don't have anything to hold him on. (JACK turns to walk into the video room. SAMANTHA continues down the hallway.) [INT. VIDEO ROOM] JACK: Any luck reconstructing the video? (The VIDEO TECHS look up.) VIDEO TECHNICIAN: Still working on it. CUT TO: [EXT. COMMUNITY (STOCK) - DAY] LEGEND: TRAINOR'S BAR AND GRILL SCENE #34: [EXT. TRAINOR'S BAR AND GRILL] (MARTIN stands outside looking at the wall covered with graffiti. It reads: FREAK (in black) KILLER (in red) MOLESTER (in black) ] (BARRY MITCHUM walks up to MARTIN.) BARRY MITCHUM: Believe what they've done to this place? MARTIN: Well, this kind of stress can bring out the worst in some people. BARRY MITCHUM: I'm ashamed. MARTIN: You know, I-I was wondering, Mr. Mayor, uh ... you told one of our agents that you were at a conference in Hoboken the morning that Annie disappeared. BARRY MITCHUM: Um, yeah, that's right. MARTIN: Right. Well, that's funny, because we have it that you were at the Richfield Motel off of Route 25 between 2:00 and 9:00 A.M. That morning. BARRY MITCHUM: What? MARTIN: Yeah, I was just there. Next time you want to hide something you might want to avoid using your own credit card. BARRY MITCHUM: What the hell are you into my credit cards? MARTIN: Because one little girl is dead and another is still missing. BARRY MITCHUM: You think I killed Annie Miller in that hotel room? When Siobhan went missing I was with the rescue committee. That's thirty people who could vouch for my whereabouts. MARTIN: We have a witness that confirms that you've been lying to us. Look, it's pretty simple, Mr. Mayor. You can either tell me the truth right now or you can take a walk in front of all those TV cameras in handcuffs. BARRY MITCHUM: (he swallows) I was at the hotel with Derrick Trainer. We go there sometimes. You understand now? MARTIN: (nods) Okay. All right. Then why didn't you come forward? You knew we arrested him. BARRY MITCHUM: I was... I was trying to protect my family. MARTIN: Right. And look what happened. BARRY MITCHUM: (points at MARTIN) This happened ... because of you. CUT TO: SCENE #35: [INT. FBI - BULLPEN -- DAY] LEGEND: 10.5 HOURS MISSING (VIVIAN is looking at the laptop videos. She calls SAMANTHA over.) VIVIAN: Samantha. (SAMANTHA gets up and looks at the laptop screen over VIVIAN'S shoulder.) VIVIAN: Have you seen this one yet? SAMANTHA: No. (VIVIAN starts up the video on the computer.) ANNIE MILLER: (v.o.) Here we are at the Arintero home. Where co-host Siobhan Arintero has been all of her young life. VIVIAN: See that guy in the background-- are they flirting? ANNIE MILLER: (v.o.) ... The only child of Jose and Wanda. SAMANTHA: Looks like he's flirting. ANNIE: (v.o.) ...Took her first steps said her first words and generally tore the place down since the day she was born. (VIVIAN enhances the video.) VIVIAN: Is that the same guy? (SAMANTHA puts the mug photos of MIGUEL GONZALEZ next to the screen to compare.) SAMANTHA: Miguel Gonzalez. Yeah, it sure looks like it. VIVIAN: He works with Siobhan's father. He's got three DUIs, six-month probation for domestic violence. He was supposed to be out on a job today but never showed and his wife has no idea where he is. SAMANTHA: Let's head back up there. CUT TO: SCENE #36: [INT. FBI - VIDEO ROOM -- DAY] (Camera opens on the beginning of ANNIE MILLER'S video.) JACK: How about the sound? You were able to get anything? VIDEO TECHNICIAN: uh-mmm. [No.] (They turn to watch the video. As they watch, there's a sound on the video.) JACK: You hear that, you hear the voice? VIDEO TECHNICIAN: There's nothing there. If there were you'd see here, there'd be a modulation. (The VIDEO TECHNICIAN points to the monitor screen where the lines are flat to illustrate his point.) (JACK sighs.) CUT TO: SCENE #37: [INT. ARINTERO'S LANDSCAPING - LOCKER ROOM -- DAY] LEGEND: ARINTERO LANDSCAPING (SAMANTHA has MR. BRANDINI open MIGUEL GONZALEZ' locker. MR. BRANDINI steps aside after cutting the lock.) (SAMANTHA searches the locker.) VIVIAN: Gonzalez's just called. He was on a bender last night. Now he's back at home sleeping it off. (SAMANTHA finds something.) SAMANTHA: Well look at this. (She holds out the friendship bracelet.) VIVIAN: Annie's or Siobhan's? (SAMANTHA and VIVIAN head out.) FADE TO BLACK. (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN. SCENE #38: [INT. FBI - INTERVIEW ROOM] LEGEND: 18 HOURS MISSING (JACK and VIVIAN question MIGUEL GONZALEZ.) VIVIAN: You recognize this? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: No. JACK: We found it in your locker. (JACK puts the bagged friendship bracelet on the table in front of MIGUEL GONZALEZ. He glances down at it, confused.) MIGUEL GONZALEZ: What is it? JACK: It's a bracelet. Belonged to Annie Miller. MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I have never seen this before in my life. JACK: Really? How do you suppose it got in your locker? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I don't know. Maybe somebody put it there. VIVIAN: We found this in the alley behind your house. (VIVIAN puts the bagged show on the table in front of MIGUEL GONZALEZ.) JACK: That is Annie Miller's shoe. MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I swear to god I have never seen that before. VIVIAN: Where were you on the morning that Annie Miller disappeared? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: Driving to work. VIVIAN: It took you all day to drive to work? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I mean, in the morning from 7:00 to 8:00. JACK: We didn't say what time she disappeared. (MIGUEL GONZALEZ looks at them, confused.) MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I know, but the guys at work, they talk about it. She was going to the school, right? VIVIAN: What about the morning Siobhan disappeared? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: Same thing. In my car. JACK: That really works well for you, doesn't it? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I don't know anything about those girls. I barely ever saw them! JACK: Really? We have a videotape of you sweet-talking Siobhan. MIGUEL GONZALEZ: She used to come up to me. She wanted to teach me English or something. JACK: You're a wife beater, right? You like to beat your wife. You like to hit her. You like to slap her around. What's the matter? Your wife not powerless enough? You want to pick on little girls now? Is that it, huh? MIGUEL GONZALEZ: I swear I didn't do anything. JACK: I tell you what. I got enough to put you away for life, do you understand? Right now! VIVIAN: But of course, if you tell us where Siobhan is we can at least make sure that you get a window in your cell. You've been locked up before, haven't you, Miguel? You know how important it is to have a window. (Nervous and just a bit scared, MIGUEL GONZALEZ starts to murmur and pray.) CUT TO: SCENE #39: [INT. FBI - BULLPEN -- DAY] (SAMANTHA stares at the video on the laptop) DANNY: We just got Annie Miller's DNA report. She was sexually assaulted. Nothing matches -- Miguel Gonzalez or Derrick Trainer. Semen: Negative; blood: Negative; fingerprints: Negative. (SAMANTHA sighs and shakes her head.) DANNY: Hey. MARTIN: Hey. (DANNY leaves. MARTIN walks up. He puts the mug of coffee he's carrying down on the counter of SAMANTHA'S desk.) MARTIN: Now, that drive is brutal. (MARTIN clears his throat. SAMANTHA continues to stare at the laptop screen in front of her and doesn't really respond to MARTIN'S comment. He looks at her.) MARTIN: (concerned) You all right? SAMANTHA: I, uh ... (SAMANTHA looks at MARTIN and shakes her head.) ... nope. (MARTIN moves his mug and puts it down on her desk. He goes to stand next to SAMANTHA and rubs her back in support. He looks at her and smiles.) (SAMANTHA goes back to list of videos and changes it.) The VIDEO FILE list includes: Annie and Siobhan Show (Video File) Fun at Siobhan's (Video File) Ravenwood's Finest (Video File) A Day at the Beach (Video File) Meet Mr. Brandini (Video File) Annie's Big Adventure (Video File) The Ravenwood Song (Video File) Our Town (Video File) It's Snow-Time (Video File) (SAMANTHA highlights: MEET MR. BRANDINI.) (On video, we see MR. BRANDINI talking with WANDA ARINTERO on the front porch of house #356. WANDA ARINTERO is facing the camera; MR. BRANDINI'S back is to the camera facing her.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (narrates) (o.s. on video) I get a visitor. There's my mom, Wanda and Mr. Brandini my dad's right-hand man. He just came by to drop off some stuff and then my mom made some coffee and blah, blah, blah, it's, like, an hour later and now he's got to work. (MR. BRANDINI turns around and walks back down the front walk. He's wearing a thick pair of glasses with black frames. SAMANTHA sees this and reacts instantly to it.) SAMANTHA: Oh, my god. (SAMANTHA rewinds the video to look at MR. BRANDINI.) SAMANTHA: Oh, god, that's him. CUT TO: SCENE #40: [INT. OBSERVATION ROOM] (JACK and DANNY look at MIGUEL GONZALEZ through the glass in the observation room. JACK'S facing the room; DANNY has his back to the glass.) JACK: This guy still doesn't have an alibi. Either somebody planted that evidence to frame him or he's working with a partner. DANNY: Back to square one. JACK: Right. (SAMANTHA walks up to them.) SAMANTHA: Guys, I got something I want to show you. (SAMANTHA leaves the room. The men follow.) CUT TO: SCENE #41: [INT. FBI - BULLPEN -- DAY] (On video, ANNIE and SIOBHAN sit cross-legged, side-by-side on the bed. They have a conversation directly to the camera.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) You know who thinks you're cute? ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Who? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Mr. Steamy Eye. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Ew! Gross. You mean, Mr. Steamy four eyes? SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Mr. Steamy four eyes! ANNIE MILLER: (on video) I feel kind of sorry for him. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Oh, please, you feel sorry for everybody ANNIE MILLER: (on video) I do. He's kind of pathetic. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (on video) Yeah, I know. In a steamy four eyes kind of way. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Ewww! (JACK stops the video.) SAMANTHA: He's been around the girls for years. His obsession is building. Annie reaches the cusp of womanhood he can't take it anymore, he snaps. DANNY: Okay. How many people in Ravenwood wear glasses? And even if he is Mr. Steamy-eyed it doesn't mean anything. SAMANTHA: Wait. Listen. You met Brandini, right? You've talked to him. Isn't he the kind of guy they would call "gross"? Isn't he the kind of guy they would call "sad" and "pathetic"? VIVIAN: Yeah, and they both felt sorry for him so neither of them would have been afraid to get into his car. SAMANTHA: Especially Siobhan because he worked for her father. So, even after Annie disappeared she might not hesitate to go with him. VIVIAN: Or he could have planted that evidence quite easily. SAMANTHA: (nods) uh-huh. [yes.] JACK: You know, these girls are very different physical types. Maybe Brandini didn't take Siobhan for sex. Maybe he thought she knew something. That's why he decided to grab her this morning despite the high risk. MARTIN: Since he works for Siobhan's father and doesn't have a sexual interest wouldn't he have a harder time killing her? DANNY: So now what? JACK: He might. DANNY: You want to bring him in? JACK: No. We draw him out. CUT TO: SCENE #42: [EXT. CITY HALL -- DAY] (JACK is holding a press conference outside Ravenwood's City Hall.) JACK: Currently we have a man in custody for the abduction and murder of Annie Miller. He has confessed to the crime and we're confident that he will soon confess the whereabouts of Siobhan Arintero. Thank you. (MR. BRANDINI stands in the crowd listing out front. MARTIN has his eyes on him. JACK finishes his announcement and leaves. He stands next to VIVIAN.) VIVIAN: If we're wrong and little girls still walking the streets again ... JACK: I don't think little girls are going to walk the streets alone again for a long time. CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK COMMUNITY (STOCK) - DAY] SCENE #43: [INT. MARTIN'S CAR -- DAY] (They watch as MR. BRANDINI leaves his driveway. VIVIAN reports.) VIVIAN: (to mic) Suspect in transit... (The car turns the corner. MARTIN puts the car in gear preparing to follow.) VIVIAN: (to mic) ... and turning north on Sycamore. CUT TO: SCENE #44: [INT. JACK'S CAR - DAY -- CONTINUOUS] (MR. BRANDINI'S car turns onto Sycamore. JACK follows him.) JACK: (to mic) Got it. SAMANTHA: Think he made us? JACK: It's the last thing on his mind. CUT TO: SCENE #45: [EXT. -- DAY] (MR. BRANDINI'S car turns to a secluded spot and stops. He hurriedly gets out of the car and slams the driver's door shut.) (Cut to: JACK and SAMANTHA approach the scene cautiously with their guns drawn.) (Cut to: MR. BRANDINI heads for the shed. He opens the shed door to expose a dirty old dust-covered car inside. We hear a muffled scream.) (MR. BRANDINI opens the trunk hood and we see SIOBHAN ARINTERO tied up inside, her mouth taped. She continues to scream.) (Cut to: JACK and SAMANTHA are on the other side of MR. BRANDINI'S parked car. They run and set up position behind the car, their guns on MR. BRANDINI.) (MR. BRANDINI, unaware that they're there, takes out his own gun from his pocket.) JACK: Freeze! Fbi! (MR. BRANDINI swings around and points the gun at them. JACK and SAMANTHA fire. MR. BRANDINI gets hit and falls down. SIOBHAN continues to scream.) (JACK and SAMANTHA run toward MR. BRANDINI and SIOBHAN. Other officers arrive at the scene.) (JACK checks MR. BRANDINI'S pulse. SAMANTHA checks on SIOBHAN. JACK tosses MR. BRANDINI'S gun away from him and joins SAMANTHA who is getting SIOBHAN out of the car.) JACK: Let's get her out of the car. JACK: (to the officers behind him) Somebody get an ambulance. (JACK carries SIOBHAN out of the trunk.) JACK: All right, sweetheart. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. (SIOBHAN continues to cry. He picks her up and carries her away from the car.) CUT TO: SCENE #46: [EXT. -- NIGHT] (SIOBHAN ARINTERO sits on the gurney. SAMANTHA stands next to her.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: I know him. He works for my dad. I got to tell Annie about this. (She lifts up her left hand ... the one with her friendship bracelet on ... and brushes her hair aside from her forehead.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: She's not going to believe it. She's not going to believe any of this. (SIOBHAN suddenly turns and grabs SAMANTHA fiercely. SAMANTHA wraps her arms around the girl and holds her tightly.) SAMANTHA: (quietly) Your parents are going to be here soon, sweetheart, okay? (SAMANTHA looks up at JACK, who stands on the side watching them. JACK turns and looks away.) CUT TO: SCENE #47: [EXT. MILLER RESIDENCE -- DAY] (SAMANTHA walks up the front walk toward the MILLER house.) CUT TO: SCENE #48: [INT. MILLER RESIDENCE - ANNIE'S BEDROOM - DAY] (CAROL MILLER stares at a framed baby picture of ANNIE. She's sitting at ANNIE'S vanity, SAMANTHA stands near her.) CAROL MILLER: We don't look alike. Did you notice that? She didn't have any hair when she was born. Just this little cueball of a head. (She smiles sadly.) I kept saying to the nurse "Are you sure that's my baby? She doesn't look at all like me." (CAROL clutches the framed photo to her chest.) (SAMANTHA takes out a disk.) SAMANTHA: I, uh ... I got a chance to see all of Annie's work and ... I brought something I thought you might like to see. (SAMANTHA walks over to ANNIE'S desk and puts it in the computer.) SAMANTHA: I'll leave you alone. CAROL MILLER: No. (CAROL grabs SAMANTHA'S arm.) Please, don't go. SAMANTHA: Okay. (SAMANTHA straightens. CAROL doesn't let go of SAMANTHA'S hand. The video starts.) SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (o.s.) (on video) So who do you love? ANNIE MILLER: (on video) My uncle Derrick. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (o.s.) (on video) Who else? ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Carol Doreen Miller, my mom. SIOBHAN ARINTERO: (o.s.) (on video) I didn't know her middle name was Doreen. That's cool. ANNIE MILLER: (on video) Hey, mom, I know I don't say this too often but I really do love you, seriously. (CAROL watches the monitor and smiles at her daughter on screen.) (ANNIE grins back cheekily at the camera and sticks her tongue out ... at her mom.) (CAROL watches and laughs. SAMANTHA puts her hand over CAROL'S.) (CAROL closes her eyes and lowers her head as she starts to cry.) (Camera holds on SAMANTHA.)
